Wading ankle-deep in the bluebells

I've felt so much like Leonard Bast these days.

I think it's partly that I'm writing about culture and class in various places, so there are obvious associations there. But in some more fundamental way, I have been either fighting or succumbing to the urge to walk off into the night for the last couple weeks.

Taken at 3:13 a.m.

Here's to not getting crushed.

Hopefully you won't meet any Schlegel sisters who'll come around and fuck up your life! Or any f'n Wilcoxes, either!

You know, I was watching little clips of interviews with Zizek last night (WHEN I COULD NOT SLEEP) and he said something about the symbolic England and the symbolic Germany (and the symbolic France, although that works less well here) - about the great economic pragmatism of the English and the great Romanticism of German music and poetry. Of course, it's the clash between the the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes. Of course each family has figures that defy the symbolic order, but they can both afford to. Poor Leonard Bast, on the other hand, told by his education that he could achieve Great Things, does not realize that he is not capable of the same kind of mutability.

Anyway. Thanks for reading.
